Abstract We introduce the notion of incidence stratification of a projective variety. Classical examples of incidence strata are Schubert varieties and matroidal strata in Grassmannians, Schubert varieties and matroidal strata in flag varieties. In case a matroidal maximality property holds, the incidence stratification gives a set of generators for the Chow group of the variety.
